What an incredible audiobook experience! Opal Reyne has crafted something truly special with A Soul to Keep, and the narration brings every steamy, emotional moment to life perfectly. This book completely consumed me from start to finish. I found myself falling head over heals in love with Orpheus and Reia! F**k off Katerina!
The world-building is PERFECT. Opal creates a rich, atmospheric setting that feels both mythological and grittily real. The veil isn’t just a backdrop – it’s a living, breathing character in its own right. The author’s attention to detail in crafting this dark realm, with its own rules, dangers, and haunting beauty, completely immersed me. Every scene painted such vivid imagery that I could practically feel the otherworldly atmosphere through my headphones. Wishing I could see the cozy cottage and join Reia and Orpheus for breakfast/tea in the garden amongst the soft sunlight in the veil. The mythology is woven seamlessly into the modern elements, creating a unique universe that feels both familiar and refreshingly original.
Orpheus is everything – brooding, complex, and utterly swoon-worthy, but he’s so much more than your typical alpha male love interest. His character development throughout the story is masterful. He’s dangerous yet vulnerable, powerful yet broken, and watching him slowly open up and reveal his depths had me completely hooked and falling in love! The imagery of his character made up of all the people/animals he’d consumed was chilling, yet magnificently beautiful.
The relationship between Orpheus and Rhea is absolutely electric. Their dynamic is incredibly complex – starting with distrust and fear, evolving into something that’s equal parts tender and explosive. Reia isn’t a weak heroine by any means; she holds her own against Orpheus, challenges him, and grows into her own power throughout the story. The push and pull between them, the way they both fight their attraction while being unable to deny it, creates such delicious tension. Their banter is sharp and witty, their emotional moments are deeply moving, and their steamy scenes…AHHHHH! Let’s just say I had to pause the audiobook more than once to collect myself! Orpheus loving kind nature towards Reia was absolutely AMAZING. Then once he claimed her for the first time. The spicy scenes in this audiobook are so vivid and EXTRA SPICY.
What I love most is how their relationship develops organically. It’s not instalove – it’s earned through shared experiences, vulnerability, and genuine understanding. Watching Orpheus’s walls come down for Reia, and seeing Reia discover her own strength and desires, was incredibly satisfying.
The spice level is perfect – intensely passionate and steamy without overwhelming the plot. The sexual tension builds beautifully throughout, and when it finally pays off… chef’s kiss The intimate scenes are emotional as well as physical, which made them even more impactful.
Narrator performance: Outstanding voice work that truly enhances the story. Each character feels distinct and the emotional range is impressive. The narrator captures both Orpheus’s dark magnetism and Reia’s fierce spirit perfectly, making their dialogue come alive in ways that added another layer to my enjoyment. I felt as if I could really hear and feel the emotion from each and every character in the book! Loved the little bookshop stop in the demon village. The narrator’s performance for the bookshop keeper demon was next level. I felt as if I could literally see him bouncing with excitement while speaking to Reia and cowering in fear once Orpheus arrived.
The pacing is expertly handled – never rushing the emotional development but never dragging either. Each chapter left me desperate for more, and I found myself making excuses to keep listening. The plot has genuine stakes and surprises that kept me guessing, while the romantic tension remained the perfect driving force throughout.
This audiobook masterfully balances dark romance with genuine emotional depth, trauma healing, and personal growth. It explores themes of redemption, the power of choice, and finding light in darkness in ways that felt meaningful rather than superficial.

This audiobook had me staying up way too late, finding excuses to keep listening, and immediately searching for more books by this author. The emotional investment I felt in Orpheus and Reia’s journey was intense – I laughed, I swooned, I got genuinely emotional during their most vulnerable moments.
Highly recommend for mature readers who love their romance dark, steamy, emotionally complex, and set in richly imagined worlds! This is the kind of book that stays with you long after the final chapter.
